Qualitative methods for reasoning under uncertainty /

xviii, 506p. , 23cm.
ISBN : 0262161680.
006.33 PAR 142909
In this book the author describes qualitative methods for
reasoning under uncertainty, "uncertainty" being a catch-
all term for various types of imperfect information. The
author does not invent completely new methods for
reasoning under uncertainty but provides the means to
create qualitative versions of existing methods. To
illustrate this, he develops qualitative versions of
probability theory, possibility theory, and the Dempster-
Shafer theory of evidence. According to him, these
theories are best considered complementary rather than
exclusive. This approach leads naturally to the use of
several different methods in the solution of a single
problem and to the complexity of integrating the results
problem to which qualitative methods provide a solution.

This book traces the growth of a new middle class in
Kathmandu as urban Nepalis harness the modern cultural
resources of mass media and consumer goods to build
modern identities and pioneer a new socio-cultural space
in one of the world-s -least developed countries-.The
author looks at the cultural practices of this new middle
class, examining such phenomena as cinema and video
viewing, popular music, film magazines, local fashion
systems, and advertising. He explores three interactive
and mutually constitutive ethnographic terrains: a
burgeoning local consumer culture, a growing mass-
mediated popular imagination, and a recently emerging
youth culture. He shows how an array of local cultural
narratives - stories of honor, value, prestige, and piety
- flow in and around global narratives of -progress-,
modernity, and consumer fulfilment.

What do soaring debt, endemic narcissism, road rage,
political attack ads and killer drones share in common?
All are symptoms of a society that moves, reflexively and
relentlessly, to exploit the fastest, most efficient
means to any end, without regard to cost. This is the
-impulse society- in which we live. In every facet of
postindustrial society - the way we eat, the way we
communicate and entertain, the way we work, the way we
court lovers and raise children, educate and govern -
technology and affluence has let us reach our goals with
a speed and efficiency unimaginable even a generation
ago. But the result is not all milk, honey, and gold.In
this book, the author traces the roots of this problem,
damningly revealing how it has permeated society, and
cogently argues how it may, perhaps, still be reversed.

Education and media services have much in common. Both
provide services that embody local cultures, in which
there is extensive public sector participation and
significant domestic regulation. Yet, both areas are
lightly committed in international trade agreements like
the GATS. This lack of commitment and the lack of
additional impact from negotiations in bilateral
discriminatory trade agreements are cross-cutting themes
in the book. It responds to these issues to provide
readers with a comprehensive and consistent treatment of
policy in the higher education and media services sector
across a range of Asian economies little studied in the
existing literature. It also opens the discussion with an
overview of global trends in each area, followed by
detailed, country-specific studies.

In order to stay efficient, companies need to improve
their existing business processes on a continuous basis.
To ensure competitive edge, it is essential for companies
to adapt radically to new business opportunities and when
external demands change. However, experience and research
show that companies have difficulties managing both the
continuous improvement of the existing system and radical
change at the same time. By using TQM and BPR to
represent the two approaches to change the author
